"Worse than waiting for election results!"

This was the angst plea from Cllr David Clifford of Rushmoor BC while
he awaited the results of his Post Graduate Certificate in Local
Governance for Councillors. David, along with his fellow
councillor-students, was among the first to graduate from this
programme last year at London South Bank University. For David, the
anxiety was worth it! He reflected "This course has taught me more in
the last twelve months than I could ever have imagined about local
governance and my role as an elected member of a local authority.
There is no question in mind that I am a better community advocate as
a result." David has gone on to study for a Masters in Public
Administration (MPA) at LSBU so he is getting used to the anxious wait
for results!
The programme was hailed as a huge success by other participants too,
receiving such comments such as "I can honestly say" confessed Cllr
Ruth O'Keeffe of East Sussex County Council, "I have never been on a
course that held my attention in the way the Postgraduate Certificate
course has done. It has been consistently interesting and has informed
my practice as a councillor in a way I did not think an 'academic'
course would be likely to".
Bruce Tennent of Eastleigh Borough Council was equally enthusiastic. "This course" he said "accelerated my knowledge to such an extent that I no longer feel that I am a novice councillor. I would recommend that all councillors take this course since it will amply prepare them for life in the public sector"
The Postgraduate Certificate is designed for all elected Councillors
but it may be of particular interest to Councillors who wish to pursue
a career in local politics and/or wish to serve their local community
better. In this new climate of austerity the course will better equip
councillors to make critical decisions relating to operational
efficiencies enabling them to "lead with less" whilst still enhancing
service delivery of their local community. The course will cover areas
such as commissioning, change management, localism and much more.
This year the course will be delivered in a more manageable format to accommodate better the busy lifestyles of councillors. Starting in Sept/Oct 2010, the programme will be offered in "bite sized chunks" so three separate accredited development courses will run.
1) Community, Leadership, Representation and Change in October 2010
2) Governance, Policy and Regulation in February 2011
3) Local Service Delivery in October 2011.
If participants complete all three development courses they will graduate from LSBU with a Post Graduate Certificate in Local Governance for Councillors. However, because each unit is academically accredited, these 'credits' can be used toward other postgraduate awards.
For 2010/11 cost of each course is £866 (with some of the discounts available) including if you serve in the South East region you may also be eligible to receive an additional subsidy of £333, bringing the price down to just £533.
