Representative local democracy should be just what it says: representative, local and democratic. The times when a narrow cross section of a local community dominate our town, city and county halls has no place in the 21st century. Our changing and diverse local communities need and deserve effective local representation.
At the same time it is time for renewal and debate about we use the elected representatives of local democracy to make communities better places. Liberal Democrats have been long advocates of community and democracy, and we're looking forward to this exciting new chapter for local Councillors.
